About me
Nicole Duncan is a former State Public Defender and now works at the Denver County Municipal Public Defender's Office in their new Youth Muni Division. Nicole's primary focus is Racial Justice and the importance of raising race in all aspects of Youth Defense to better honor her clients, their stories, and goals. Nicole formerly defended youth charged as adults, as well as emerging adulthood cases. She gives trainings on raising race, adolescent identity development, and the power of data in the courtroom, as well as the direct link of the School to Prison Pipeline and Children charged as adults. She aims to use a holistic model of defense, and practices this by connecting and actively participating with local youth organizations in Denver, learning from them, and connecting her clients and their families with them. Nicole joined the Colorado Juvenile Defender Center Board ("CJDC") in January 2023 , which is now the Transformative Justice Project. She was the Youth Policy Council for the ACLU-CO's 2022 Legislative session, assisting with polices, data, and legislation related to youth justice. She had the privilege of being named the Juvenile Defender of the Year in 2020 by the Colorado Juvenile Defender Center, and is a 2020 Georgetown Law Ambassador for Racial Justice Alumni, and is JTIP (Juvenile Training Immersion Program) certified twice through the Gault Center.
