About me
Becky is a litigator and advocate on behalf of people with life and other excessive sentences. In January 2023, Becky was chosen to develop the Second Look Network for The Sentencing Project. The Sentencing Project advocates for effective and humane responses to crime that minimize imprisonment and criminalization of youth and adults by promoting racial, ethnic, economic, and gender justice. The Second Look Network will provide support to lawyers and activists across the country who are dedicated to representing and supporting individuals seeking relief from long sentences.
From December 2020 thru January 2023, Becky created and led the Baltimore City State's Attorney's new Sentencing Review Unit (SRU), one of only a handful in the U.S. She reviewed decades-old convictions and sentences of elderly inmates and those convicted as juveniles to determine whether the office will support or oppose their release. As of December 2022, SRU has successfully advocated for the release of 51 individuals. There remains a 0% recidivism rate.
Becky also previously served as the Deputy Public Defender for Maryland's Office of the Public Defender and as the Chief of the Post Conviction Defenders Division. She managed the Agency's state-wide Unger litigation that resulted in the release of 200 inmates back into Maryland communities, after having served 30-50 years in prison. As of December 2022, there is less than a 4% recidivism rate of the 200 releases.
